Copper-coated gouging rods: jointed and non-jointed. Jointed gouging rods offer copper coated male and female ends; they also have most suitable arc-supporting qualities. Non-jointed rods are made with 30 degree tapered ends; used for scarfing, trimming, gouging and washing iron and steel castings, and for burning grooved weld joints and removing welding back-up plates.
When rapid metal removal is your prime requirement, select the smallest diameter rod that will carry the current. When your prime requirement is a smooth finish, select the largest diameter rod for the available power supply. Large diameter rods provide smoothest arc-cleaning finishes. Finish can also be improved by operating at a smaller angle to the workpiece.
Rods and plates can be used as welding plugs, backup plates, and stirring rods.
